About smart drugs@TUM
smartdrugs@TUM performs fundamental research on the development of new drugs which are more effective and safer for multiple diseases. To achieve this, the center includes innovative concepts in early drug design and discovery to better predict ligand-target interactions, from integrative structural biology and advanced imaging-based methods and proteomic approaches for target identification/validation, to artificial intelligence (AI). The chemical space needs to be efficiently enlarged when searching for new active ingredients, most notably by taking precedence from natural sources and by the design of protein-based therapeutics. In addition, the center aims to accelerate the transition from preclinical research towards clinical applications in patients. Thus, we need a better understanding of the human pathophysiology and biological pathways underlying specific diseases. This requires to develop a better predictability of human pharmacology and drug safety, and more advanced in vitro and in vivo models translating to the individual patient. Finally, innovative ways for drug delivery are crucial.
To promote translation, smartdrugs@TUM is closely linked to the TUM venture labs to foster start-up activities and enable the transfer of intellectual property protection and exploitation. Of note, as an academic institute, smartdrugs@TUM will also focus on the education and training of undergraduate and graduate students in the different fields of expertise in medicinal chemistry, bio-pharmaceutical sciences and drug discovery. Thus, the offered educational and training programs will mold talented and committed students and postdocs into the next generation of leading scientists.
